Abraham Maslow provided a theory of need known as Maslow's hierarchy of needs. According to the Abraham Maslow, the motivation of human beings need are organised in hierarchy. This hierarchy ranges from the basic need s of a human being to the abstract need of them.
Maslow classified the needs of hierarchy of a person into five needs of hierarchy. They are :
1. physiological needs
2. safety needs
3. love
4. esteem
5. self-actualization
Hayley enrolling herself in a self-defense course is driven by her "safety needs" of hierarchy.
According to Maslow there are five needs that a person has. They are arranged in a hierarchy.

Esteem needs
Self actualizing needs.
Safety needs are the needs that are needed to survive. These needs arise from wanting to keep ourselves safe in terms of shelter, stability, health, security and safety.
Hence, Hayley's she is driven by her safety needs.
