Both William Lloyd and Frederick Douglas were prominent abolitionists during the second half of the 19th century. Besides siding against slavery and demanding the immediate abolition of this practice, they also fought for equal rights for Women. Lloyd became a voice of the Women's suffrage movement.

However, their ways of focusing their efforts against slavery were slightly different. While Douglass argued in favor of the freedom of slaves, Lloyd became a member of the American Colonization Society. An organization that promoted the resettlement of African Americans back to African territory. Particularly the area is known as the country of Liberia nowadays.

This was due to the South having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that they were obligated to give African-Americans equal voting rights. The above were both harsha and offensive tactics used against former slaves, so that they were unable to vote.
