A famous Italian scientist named Amedeo Avogadro (not avocado) realized that certain elements were naturally heavier than others, so 1 gram of gold, for instance, had far fewer atoms than 1 gram of lithium. He created a unit of measure, called a mole, which we now know is equal to 6.022*10^{23} particles of a substance.

It is defined such that 12 grams of carbon-12 is equal to 1 mole, but we don't actually need to know that. We use the atomic mass units on the periodic table of the elements to get a molar mass in moles per gram.

For instance, nitrogen has an atomic mass of 14.01 amu. This is equivalent to 14.01 grams per mole.

With this information, let's find how many moles are in 1.11 * 10^{24} hydrogen molecules.

We use Avogadro's number, which says that

1 \ mol = 10^{24} \ particles.

So, making this our conversion factor, we have
1.11 * 10^{24} \ molecules \ * \ \dfrac{1 \ mol}{6.022 * 10^{23} \ molecules} =  \dfrac{1.11*10}{6.022} \ mol \\\\\\ = 1.84 \ mol

From the periodic table of the elements, we have
1.008 \  \dfrac{g \ H}{mol \ H}.

But, since we have diatomic (molecular) hydrogen, this is actually H_2. So, we double our number.

\dfrac{2.016 \ g \ H_2}{mol \ H_2}

Now, we use this molar mass as our conversion factor to get from moles to grams.

1.84 \ mol \ H_2 \ * \  \dfrac{2.016 \ g \ H_2}{mol \ H_2} = 3.98 \ g \ H_2

Briefly explain why adding salt to icy roads helps melt the ice and prevent it from freezing again.
g100num [7]

Answer:

See explanation below

Explanation:

The melting point (the temperature that it changes from solid to liquid) of a pure substance depends on its mass, the forces between its molecules, and the pressure of the system.

The melting point, or the freezing point, of a mixture, is a temperature between the melting point of its components. Salt has a huge negative melting point, so when it is added to the water, the melting point decreases from 0ºC to -21ºC approximately.

So, the water will only freeze again if the temperature becomes below -21ºC which is very difficult to happen.

Calculate the moles and grams of solute in 2.0 L of 0.30M Na SO..
Ostrovityanka [42]

Answer:

Number of moles of solute = 0.6 mole

Mass =13.8 g

Explanation:

Given data:

Number of moles of sodium = ?

Volume = 2.0 L

Molarity = 0.30 M

Mass in gram of sodium= ?

Solution:

<em>Number of moles:</em>

Molarity = number of moles of solute / volume in litter

Number of moles of solute = Molarity × volume in litter

Number of moles of solute = 0.30 M × 2.0 L

Number of moles of solute = 0.6 mole

<em>Mass in gram:</em>

Mass = Number of moles × molar mass

Mass = 0.6 mole× 23 g/mol

Mass =13.8 g
