Light can be described as a wave or as a particle known as a photon. The speed of light c is 3.00 ✕ 108 m/s. (a) Sirius is the b

rightest star in the night sky, 8.18 ✕ 1016 m from the Earth. Find the time it takes a photon to reach us from Sirius. Give your answer in years. (Assume one year is 365 days.)

Answer:

The answer is 8.64 light years.

Explanation:

The formula used for this is the light travel equations.

d=c*t\\

where d = distance light travels in one year

c  = speed of light

t = seconds in one year

now

d=3.0*10^8 * (365*24*60*60)\\d = 9.46*10^1^2 km\\9.46*10^1^5m

Now we have calculated the distance light covers in one year and we have distance from Sirius star to earth which is given in the statement

distance=8.18*10^1^6m

Dividing the distance of sirius from earth to the distance light travels in one year will give the time required for light to reach earth from Sirius .

=8.18*10^1^6/9.46*10^1^5\\=8.64

Therefore, it will take 8.64 light years for a photon to reach us from Sirius.

A ball is tossed with a velocity of 10 m/s directed vertically upward from a window located 20 m above the ground. Determine the
marusya05 [52]

Answer:

Explanation:

Given

Initial velocity of ball u=10\ m/s

height of window h=20\ m

Using Equation of motion

y=ut+\frac{1}{2}at^2

where u=initial velocity

t=time

a=acceleration

As ball is already is at a height of 20 m so

Y=ut+\frac{1}{2}at^2+20

Y=10\times t+0.5\times (-9.8)t^2+20

Y=-4.9t^2+10t+20

(b)highest point is obtained at v=0

v^2-u^2=2as

where

v=final velocity

u=initial velocity

a=acceleration

s=displacement

(0)-10^2=2\times (-9.8)\times s

s=\frac{100}{19.6}

s=5.102\ m

Highest Point will be s+20=25.102\ m

(c)Time taken when the ball hit the ground i.e. at Y=0

-4.9t^2+10t+20=0

t=3.28\ s

impact velocity v=\sqrt{2\times 9.8\times 25.102}

v=22.181\ m/s
