Why can’t two metals/cations bond together like ionic or covalent bonds?

Chemistry

The two metals cannot donate electrons to each other or share electrons

Why?

Elements form bonds in order to achieve the electronic configuration of a noble gas. The way for metals to do this is to lose electrons and form a cation (positively charged ion).

Let's check out each type of bond mentioned in the answer to explain why two metals cannot form those types of bonds:

  • Ionic: In ionic bonding, one atom (cation) donates its electrons to another (anion). If we have two cations there is no atom to receive the electrons, and an ionic bond will not be formed.
  • Covalent: In covalent bonding, two atoms share their electrons. This bond is found in non-metals, since the tendency for metals is to give its electrons rather than sharing them, so this type of bond will not form either.

Have a nice day!

To gain an idea as to how many atoms are in a gram or so of copper, use the larger balance
anygoal [31]

Answer:

Explanation:

To solve this problem, we must understand the relationship between mass of a substance and the number of atoms.

Atoms are the smallest indivisible particles of any matter. A substance can be made up of several number of atoms in their space.

The mass of any substance is a function of the amount of atoms its contains.

The mass of a substance is related in chemistry to the amount of atoms its contains using the parameter called the number of moles.

A mole is the amount of substance that contains the Avogadro's number of particles. This number is 6.02 x 10²³ particles. The particles here can be protons, neutrons, electrons, atoms e.t.c.

Now,

             Number of moles  = \frac{mass}{molar mass}

Molar mass of copper = 63.6g/mole

         Number of moles = \frac{2}{63.6} = 0.03mole

Since 1 mole of a substance contains 6.02 x 10²³atoms

        0.03 mole of copper will contain 0.03 x 6.02 x 10²³atoms

                                                    = 1.89 x 10²² atoms

He needs to add 1.89 x 10²² atoms to make 2g of the sample.

in the reaction mgcl2 + 2koh mg(oh)2 + 2kcl, if 3 moles mgcl2 are added to 4 moles koh what determines how much mg(oh)2 is made
otez555 [7]
Every mole of MgCl2 reacts with 2 moles of KOH, therefore the 4 moles of KOH will only react with 2 moles of MgCl2, making it the limiting reagent and therefore KOH determines how much Mg(OH)2 is produced.
