In the book "The Giver" the fish hatchery attendant is given the job title during the "Ceremony of Twelve." In the book, the character named Claire was given the job after failing at being a "Birthmother." Claire's main job is to make sure that all of the fish hatch properly. Before Claire got reassigned she was the woman in the community who would give birth to all of the children in the community. The book was written in 1993 by the author Lois Lowry.
