The 1995 Nobel Prize in chemistry was shared by Paul Crutzen, F. Sherwood Rowland, and Mario Molina for their work concerning th

e formation and decomposition of ozone in the stratosphere. Rowland and Molina hypothesized that chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in the stratosphere break down upon exposure to UV radiation, producing chlorine atoms. Chlorine was previously identified as a catalyst in the breakdown of ozone into oxygen gas. Using the enthalpy of reaction for two reactions with ozone, determine the enthalpy of reaction for the reaction of chlorine with ozone. (1) ClO ( g ) + O 3 ( g ) ⟶ Cl ( g ) + 2 O 2 ( g ) Δ H ∘ rxn = − 122.8 kJ mol (2) 2 O 3 ( g ) ⟶ 3 O 2 ( g ) Δ H ∘ rxn = − 285.3 kJ mol (3) O 3 ( g ) + Cl ( g ) ⟶ ClO ( g ) + O 2 ( g ) Δ H ∘ rxn = ?

Answer:

\Delta H_{rxn3}=-162.5 kJ/mol

Explanation:

The reaction we need to calculate:

O_3 (g) + Cl (g) \longrightarrow ClO (g) + O_2 (g)

1) O_3 (g) + ClO (g) \longrightarrow Cl (g) +2 O_2 (g)

\Delta H_{rxn}=-122.8 kJ/mol

We need the ClO in the products side, so we use the inverse of this reaction:

Cl (g) +2 O_2 (g) \longrightarrow O_3 (g) + ClO (g)

\Delta H_{rxn1}=122.8 kJ/mol

2) 2 O_3 (g) \longrightarrow 3 O_2 (g)

\Delta H_{rxn2}=-285.3 kJ/mol

Now we need to combine this two:

Cl (g) +2 O_2 (g) + 2 O_3 (g)\longrightarrow O_3 (g) + ClO (g) + 3 O_2 (g)

Cl (g) + O_3 (g)\longrightarrow ClO (g) + O_2 (g)

The enthalpy of reaction:

\Delta H_{rxn3}=\Delta H_{rxn1}+ \Delta H_{rxn2}=122.8 kJ/mol-285.3 kJ/mol

\Delta H_{rxn3}=-162.5 kJ/mol

You have decided to test the effects of five garden fertilizers by applying some of each to five separate rows of radishes. what
attashe74 [19]

You are testing which fertilizer makes the radishes grow the fastest.

factors you should control: sunlight exposure, water amount, fertilizer amount.

Measure: check the rows of radishes to see how much each row has grown in comparison to the others. Whichever row with the healthiest radishes has the best fertilizer.

Calculate the value deltaG°
atroni [7]

Answer:

ΔG=ΔG0+RTlnQ where Q is the ratio of concentrations (or activities) of the products divided by the reactants. Under standard conditions Q=1 and ΔG=ΔG0 . Under equilibrium conditions, Q=K and ΔG=0 so ΔG0=−RTlnK . Then calculate the ΔH and ΔS for the reaction and the rest of the procedure is unchanged.

When are atoms considered stable?
katrin [286]

Answer:

when they have satisfied the octet rule naturally or through bonding to obtain full valence shells

Explanation:

Generally, most atoms of an element are unstable because they have a void in their electron shell to fill, hence, they need to react with other elements to fulfil this task of octet.

Octet rule states that atoms of elements engage in reactions to form compounds so they can have eight (8) valence electrons in their shell. Noble gases e.g argon, neon etc. are elements that have naturally satisfied this octet rule by possession of 8 valence electrons in their shell. Other elements that do not have this naturally becomes reactive and enter bonding with other atoms to obtain full valence shells.

Many cold packs contain ammonium nitrate and water. The dissolving of ammonium nitrate is endothermic. Which of the following be
Effectus [21]

Answer:

E. There is a net energy increase and an entropy increase.

Explanation:

A cold pack of ammonium nitrate dissolves in water with the absorption of heat energy from the surroundings. Hence it is classified as an endothermic reaction because heat is absorbed from the surroundings into the system. The absorbed energy, which increase the net heat content or enthalpy of the ammonium nitrate, causes it to dissolve.

As the ammonium nitrate changes state from solid to liquid , the degree of randomness (or entropy) increases also as the tightly bound atoms have more room to move about in a liquid state than in a solid state.

Hence as ammonium nitrate dissolves in water  by absorbing heat from the surroundings,  there is a net increase in heat content as well as an increase in entropy.
