Answer: Roosevelt told George Curry that he would have a "free hand" in working for statehood. He openly declared that he wanted to create the state before his term expired, but since Curry's constitution included arizona as part of New mexico, statehood had to wait another few years. Arizona had to vote on whether they wanted to be part of New Mexico and they voted it down. Two years later, new mexico would become a state on its own.
