Like all problems that involve images within the question, we should definitely try to draw this out. In the picture above, I have done this.

Now, we can see that this is just a simple proportion problem. For every 2.5 cm of height of the flower, we are 2 cm from the opening, or aperture. For every 20 cm of height, how far are we? We can set up the problem like this:

20 ............2.5
-------- = ---------
...x ............. 2

where x is the unknown distance to the aperture from the flower. Now, we just need to get x by itself. A typical way of solving something like this is by doing "butterfly multiplication" which is really just a shortcut haha. Anyway, I can rewrite that equation ^ as:

20×2 = 2.5 × x

Then, to solve for x, we would divide both sides by 2.5. (If you don't know why that is, please let me know and I'll elaborate).

We would then have:

20×2
------- = x
2.5

Which then simplifies to:

x = 16

What you need to know is if two values are equal either one will be similar to the other it's only the format that's different if you calculate each of the fractions you'll see each pair is equal except for the last option

8/3=2.67 but

5/4.8=1.04

Therefore values aren't equal to each other

Roots with imaginary parts always occur in conjugate pairs. Three of the four roots are known and they are all real, which means the fourth root must also be real.

Because we know 3 and -1 (multiplicity 2) are both roots, the last root r is such that we can write

x^4-4x^3-2x^2+12x+9=(x-3)(x+1)^2(x-r)

There are a few ways we can go about finding r, but the easiest way would be to consider only the constant term in the expansion of the right hand side. We don't have to actually compute the expansion, because we know by properties of multiplication that the constant term will be (-3)(1)(1)(-r)=3r.

Meanwhile, on the left hand side, we see the constant term is supposed to be 9, which means we have

3r=9\implies r=3

so the missing root is 3.

Other things we could have tried that spring to mind:

- three rounds of division, dividing the quartic polynomial by (x-3), then by (x+1) twice, and noting that the remainder upon each division should be 0

- rational root theorem
