Presence of a teratogen in the body of mother during pregnancy is responsible for mal growth of child or incomplete growth which may lead to abortion, still birth or even a defective child.

Explanation:

A teratogen is a substance that is known to cause defects in growth of child during the intrauterine growth period. Thalidomide was used as a morning sickness drug which relieved the vomiting nature of the would be mother. But the presence of thalidomide was responsible for less growth of limbs of the child. Alcohol in intrauterine life may cause Fetal Alcoholic Syndrome which damages the fetus' sense organs and neural cord.

The presence of a teratogen during the 1st trimester is more serious than in last trimester because the main formation of different organs and systems take place in the 1st trimester and maturity takes place in third trimester.

Answer:

Teratogens interrupt the normal developmental process and interfere with pregnancy, resulting in birth defects, even in cases where the parents of the child have normal genetic characteristics. Therefore, teratogens represent a significant environmental factor that could lead to unhealthy and even fatal pregnancy outcomes. To have a healthy pregnancy, women must avoid alcohol, thalidomide, and other substances known to cause birth defects to enable the baby to grow and develop properly.

9. Write an mRNA strand that is complementary to the DNA strand AATTGC. Circle a codon.
andrew-mc [135]

Answer:

UUAACG

Explanation:

The complementary strand of the DNA strand AATTGC would be UUAACG.

The complementary nucleotide for Guanine [G] will be Cytosine [C] and applies to both DNA and RNA. But the complementary nucleotide for Adenine [A] will be Thymine [T] in DNA and Uracil [U] in RNA.

A codon is a triplet of nucleotides, so it could be any three nucleotides in the strand. Example: AAT, ATT, TTG or TGC.

2. A

3. C

5. A

Explanation:

A nursery bed can be defined as a specially prepared temporary plot of land or garden which serves as a home for raising seedlings (young plants) prior to planting them in the main location (area). Thus, when older trees in the environment or surrounding dies or are cut-off, these younger plants (trees) propagated in the nursery bed are transferred to replace them.

Some of the criteria or requirements for setting up a nursery bed are;

1. Shed: this is one structure essential in propagating young trees.

2. Location/Site: a place near a source of water should be chosen because water is essential for plant growth and coolness from extreme heat caused by the sun.

3. Storage place for tools and equipment: it is important to have a complete set of tools or their substitute to be able to carry out all nursery activities properly.

4. Boxes, pots, and plots for germinating seeds: there are three places to germinate seeds, young plants, and young trees. Pots are used for germinating young trees while boxes and plots are used for raising seedlings.

5. Soil type: different plants need different types of soil. These includes clay, loamy and sandy soil.
