With the defeat in the first world war, Germany contracted a huge debt, as it was forced to pay very high indemnities to the countries that won the war. This would generate a huge economic deficit, since Germany, due to war spending, was already economically fragile. However, the Dawes plan and the Young plan managed to reduce the value of the indemnities, which, still high, became easier to be paid, which generated an attempt to improve the economy of the German people.
