Cohesion tension mechanism

Explanation:

 • The water used by land plants is absorbed from the soil by roots,a root system consists of a complex network of individual roots that vary in age along their length
 • Fine roots are the most permeable portion of a root system, and are thought to have the greatest ability to absorb water, particularly in herbaceous (i.e., non-woody) plants
 • Fine roots can be covered by root hairs that which increase the absorptive surface area and improve contact between roots and the soil
 • Transpiration is the evaporation of water from the surface of leaf cells in actively growing plants, this water is replaced by additional absorption of water from the soil leading to a continuous column of water in the plant's xylem
 • The bulk of water absorbed and transported through plants is moved by negative pressure generated by the evaporation of water from the leaves (transpiration),this whole process is commonly referred to as the cohesion tension mechanism
