There's a catch here, and I don't really want to go into full detail. Because of
this catch, I think it would be unusually tough to write a simple equation for this
situation. If you wouldn't mind, let's just list it instead:

After . . water added . . total in pool

7 min . . . 14 gallons . . . 14 gallons
1 more . . 1 gallon . . . . . 15 gallons
7 more . . 14 gallons . . . 29 gallons
1 more . . 1 gallon . . . . . 30 gallons
5 more . . 10 gallons . . . 40 gallons, the pool is full

Add up all the minutes: 21 minutes

It would take 21 minutes
As the first 8 minutes there would be 15 gallons in the pool
In 16 minutes there would be 30 gallons in the pool
Therefore you only need 10 gallons left which will be filled up in the space of 5 minutes

Jon bought a printer for $189 and a set of printer cartridges for $192. Sales tax on these items was 6.5%. What is Jon's total b
julia-pushkina [17]
So first we need to find the total before tax. Let's add up the two prices:

189+192=381

So we know that the total before tax is $381. Now we are told that the sales tax on these items is 6.5%. It would be easier for us to convert 6.5% to a decimal in order to multiply. Let's convert 6.5% to a decimal by dividing by 100:

\frac{6.5}{100}=0.065

Now that we have the sales tax in decimal form, let's multiply this sales tax by the total amount of the items before tax ($381):

381*0.065=24.77

This means that $24.77 is the tax for this purchase. To find the total amount that Jon paid for these items after tax, you must add the tax to the total amount before tax to give you:

381+24.77=405.77

So now we know that Jon's total bill for these items is $405.77.

Devon's father is installing new wood flooring. He bought boards that are 10 ft long, 3/4 in. thick, and 11/24 in. wide. Determi
kvv77 [185]

Answer:

36 boards

Step-by-step explanation:

The boards are as long as the room, so I only had to worry about the width. If the boards were 1/2 ft wide, I would need 2 boards for every foot of width. For 16 ft, I would need 32 boards.

Instead of dividing, I wrote the equivalent multiplication by multiplying by the reciprocal of 11/24 (the reciprocal of 11/24 is 24/11)

I simplified by dividing both 2 and 24 by 2, and both 11 and 33 by 11.

Therefore he needs 36 boards

Maggie says that if the expression was 12÷3to the second power, you would divide before simplifying 3 to the second power. Is sh
mezya [45]

Answer:

Maggie is incorrect.

Step-by-step explanation:

PEMDAS tells us the order of operations and the steps of solving a mathematical statement. It states that exponents must be performed before multiplication or division.

P - Parentheses

E - Exponents

M - Multiplication

D - Division

A - Addition

S - Subtraction

Therefore, to solve 12÷3² correctly, 3² needs to be simplified to 9 before dividing.

I hope this helps!
