An old cuban fisherman has not caught anything in 84 days. despite the devotion of the young boy who brings him coffee and food , the fisherman fears he has become unlucky. on the 85th day of fishing the old man catches a small fish and decides to continue fishing. when one of his lines hooks a large marlin he decides not to go to shore until he reels it in. for two days and nights the fisherman sits alone waiting to redeem himself
The hero (Santiago) is put down by his fellow fisherman for not catching a fish for 84 days, but the old man goes out every day hoping to catch a fish and reprove himself and get back his old student (Manolin). The old man then goes out to fish one day and catches a huge Marlin that causes Santiago drag along with the fish for three days which cause Santiago to suffer extreme pain. On the third day, Santiago pulls in the Marlin and sails back to Havana (home) when a mako shark and many other gallon sharks attack the Santiago's Marlin along the boat and only leave the bone left when Santiago arrives back in Havana. Where he then goes to sleep to be awoken by Manolin.
