An alpha particle will cause a decrease in the mass number of the nuclei by 4 and the atomic number by 2.

  The reaction is shown below;

                       ²³⁸₉₂U   →  ²³⁴₉₀Th   +   ⁴₂He

We see that during an alpha decay, the mass number changes from 238 to 234 and that atomic number from 92 to 90.
