What is the maximum number of electrons in an atom that can have the following quantum numbers?
grigory [225]

We have to get the maximum number of electrons in an atom that can have the given quantum numbers.

(a) The maximum number of electrons in an atom that can  have quantum number n = 5, l = 3, m_{l} = +3 is 2 (two).

(b) The maximum number of electrons in an atom that can  have quantum number n = 3, l = 1, m_{l} = -1 is 2 (two).

Here, n= principal quantum number, l= azimuthal quantum number and m_{l}= magnetic quantum number.

l= 0 to (n-1) and m_{l}= -l to +l including 0.

(a) n = 5, l = 3, m_{l} = +3, this set of quantum number represents one 5f orbital which can contain maximum two electron of opposite spins.

(b) n = 3, l = 1, m_{l} = -1, this set of quantum number represents one 3p orbital which can contain maximum two electron of opposite spins.

A 2.241-g sample of nickel reacts with oxygen to form 2.852 g of the metal oxide.
nlexa [21]

Answer:

The empirical formula is = NiO

Explanation:

Given that:- Mass of nickel = 2.241 g

Mass of the oxide formed = 2.852 g

Mass of the oxygen reacted = Mass of the oxide formed - Mass of nickel  = 2.852 g - 2.241 g = 0.611 g

Molar mass of nickel  = 58.6934 g/mol

Moles of nickel = \frac{2.241}{58.6934}\ mol = 0.03818 mol

Molar mass of oxygen  = 15.999 g/mol

Moles of nickel = \frac{0.611}{15.999}\ mol = 0.03818 mol

Taking the simplest ratio for Ni and O as:

0.03818 : 0.03818 = 1 : 1

<u>The empirical formula is = NiO </u>

Harlamova29_29 [7]

Answer: Scientific Theory

Explanation:

A scientific theory is a broad explanation for events that is widely accepted as true. To become a theory, a hypothesis must be tested over and over again, and it must be supported by a great deal of evidence. People commonly use the word theory to describe a guess about how or why something happens.
