Mr. Marcucci received a bonus of $496 from his employer. He has to pay 33% of his bonus to taxes. How much will Mr. Marcucci pay
tiny-mole [99]
Edit: 33% is not \frac{1}{3}, therefore my solution is wrong. The correct answer is 0.33 x 496, which is $163.68

The following is the original solution, which is incorrect.
33% = \frac{1}{3}. Multiply the bonus of $496 by \frac{1}{3} to get the solution of \frac{496}{3}, or 165 and \frac{1}{3}

Therefore the solution is $165.33

Determine the effective rate for $1 for 1 year at 5.9% compounded quarterly.
kenny6666 [7]
Keeping in mind that the effective rate, is in effect the APY or Annual Percentage Yield,

\bf \qquad  \qquad  \textit{Annual Yield Formula}&#10;\\\\&#10;~~~~~~~~~\left(1+\frac{r}{n}\right)^{n}-1&#10;\\\\&#10;\begin{cases}&#10;r=rate\to 5.9\%\to \frac{5.9}{100}\to &0.059\\&#10;n=&#10;\begin{array}{llll}&#10;\textit{times it compounds per year}\\&#10;\textit{quarterly, thus four times}&#10;\end{array}\to &4&#10;\end{cases}&#10;\\\\\\&#10;\left(1+\frac{0.059}{4}\right)^{4}-1\implies (1.01475)^4-1 \approx 0.0603&#10;\\\\\\&#10;0.0603\cdot 100\implies \stackrel{\%}{6.03}

Find the discriminant of the following equation:
vladimir1956 [14]

Option 1

The discriminant of given equation is 116

<em><u>Solution:</u></em>

We have to find the discriminant of given equation

<em><u>Given equation is:</u></em>

f(x) = 4x^2+6x-5

To find discriminant,

4x^2+6x-5 = 0

\text {For a quadratic equation } a x^{2}+b x+c=0, \text { where } a \neq 0

<em><u>Discriminant is given by:</u></em>

D = b^2-4ac

On comparing the given quadratic equation 4x^2+6x-5 = 0 with general quadratic equation ax^2+bx+c = 0

a = 4

b = 6

c = -5

<em><u>Substituting in above formula,</u></em>

D = 6^2-4(4)(-5)\\\\D = 36-16(-5)\\\\D = 36+80\\\\D = 116

Thus discriminant of given equation is 116
