Neurons are nerve cells - part of the nerve system. Receiving signals from the environment or other neurons and carrying the information toward the cell body is a function of the dendrites. The dendrites are extensions at the beginning of a neuron, with tree structure. They receive chemical signals from  neurons and then convert these chemical signals into electrical impulses that are transmitted toward the cell body.
