Solution:

Amount Possessed by Janie = $ 3

Amount earned by Janie for a single chore= $ 1.20, also the number of chores can be fraction also.

Cost of a single CD= $ 13.50, which Janie want to buy.

Let number of chores done by Janie which can be a rational number also= x chores

So, transforming the statements into equation

3 + 1.20 x= 13.50

1.20 x= 13.50 - 3

1.20 x = 10.50

x=\frac{10.50}{1.20}\\\\ x=\frac{35}{4}\\\\ x=8\frac{3}{4}

So, number of chores done by Janie to buy a CD is 8\frac{3}{4}

Representation on number line is depicted below.

To represent 8\frac{3}{4} on number line, draw a line , mark point 0,1,2,3,4,....at equal distances on the number line.

Draw four points at equal distances from number 8,which represents  8\frac{1}{4}, 8\frac{2}{4},8\frac{3}{4} and fourth one is  8\frac{4}{4}=9
