A vertical piston-cylinder device contains water and is being heated on top of a range. During the process, 65 Btu of heat is tr

ansferred to the water, and heat losses from the side walls amount to 8 Btu. The piston rises as a result of evaporation, and 5 Btu of work is done by the vapor. Determine the change in the energy of the water for this process.

Answer:

The change in energy=47 Btu

Explanation:

Given that

Heat transfer to the water=60 Btu

Heat loss from the walls=8 Btu

Work done by the system= 5 Btu

From first law of thermodynamics

   Q=ΔU+W

Here Q =Heat transfer

        ΔU=Change in internal energy

         W=Work transfer

From standard sing convention

if heat is added to the system then it will taker as positive and if  heat is escaping from the system then it will taker as negative.

If work is done by system then it will take as positive and if work is done on system then it will take as negative.

So net heat transfer in the system(Q)=60-8 Btu

                                                       Q =52 Btu

Work done by system(W)= 5 Btu

Now by putting the values

 Q=ΔU+W

52= ΔU+5

ΔU=47 Btu

So the change in energy=47 Btu

Answer:

dU = 52 kJ

Explanation:

Given:

During the process,

Heat transferred to water = 65 kJ

Heat loss from side = 8 kJ

Therefore, Resultant Heat transferred to water :

dQ = 65 KJ - 8K J = 57 kJ

Work done by the Vapour:

dW = 5 kJ

Let,

from thermo-dynamic first law

we have,

dQ = dU + d W

dU = dQ - dW

     =   57 kJ - 5 kJ

     = 52 kJ

Thus, change in energy for this system is :

dU = 52 kJ

What is a perpetual motion machine of the second kind?
d1i1m1o1n [39]

Answer:

perpetual motion machine of second type is a machine that generates job from a single source of heat.

Explanation:

perpetual motion machine is a machine that generates job from a single source of heat. only one heat reservoir is present in this type of machine and it is continuously cooled to generate function without transferring heat to a cooler reservoir. Such a demonstration machine was names as ammonia engine

Why are scientists and engineers looking for ways to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels? Help
Alchen [17]
Fossil fuels when burned let out toxins and pollution in the air. Because of that scientists and engineers work together to find ways to not be so dependent on fossil fuels so we are not polluting our air.

Consider the base plate of an 800-W household iron with a thickness of L = 0.6 cm, base area of A =160 cm2, and thermal conducti
ratelena [41]

Given-

Power, P = 800W

Thickness, L = 0.6cm

Area, A = 160cm²

Thermal conductivity, k = 60W/mK

The heat conduction would be

\frac{d^2T}{dx^2} + \frac{d^2T}{dy^2} + \frac{d^2T}{dz^2} + \frac{e(gen)}{k}  = \frac{1}{\alpha } \frac{dT}{dt}

Except \frac{d^2T}{dx^2} all the values are 0.

Therefore,

\frac{d^2T}{dx^2} = 0

Thus, the boundary conditions here would be

1. Q_x_=_0 = -kA \frac{dT (0)}{dx} = Q_o

2. T(L) = T_L

A) Fix any errors to get the following program to run in your environment. B) Document each line of code with comments and descr
Bingel [31]

Answer:

Answer is explained below

Explanation:

<u>Part A -: </u>

<u> </u>

<u>Error statement -: </u>

/*

prog.cpp: In function ‘void p(const int*, int)’:

prog.cpp:7:15: error: assignment of read-only location ‘* list’

list[0] = 100;

*/

There is one error in the code in following part

void p( const int list[], int arraySize)

{

list[0] = 100;

}

you are passing list as constant but changing it inside the function that is not allowed. if you pass any argument as const then you can't change it inside the function. so remove const from function argument solve the error.

<u>Part B -: </u>

change made

void p( int list[], int arraySize)

{

list[0] = 100;

}

<u>Executable fully commented code -: </u>

#include <iostream> // importing the iostream library

using namespace std;

void m(int, int []); // Function declearation of m

void p( int list[], int arraySize) // definition of Function p

{

list[0] = 100; // making value of first element of list as 100

}

int main()

{

int x = 1; // initilizing x with 1

int y[10]; // y is a array of 10 elements

y[0] = 1; // first element of y array is 1

m(x, y); // call m function

// printing the desired result

cout << "x is " << x << endl;

cout << "y[0] is " << y[0] << endl;

return 0;

}

void m(int number, int numbers[]) // Function definition of m

{

number = 1001; // value of number is 1001 locally

numbers[0] = 5555; // making value of first element of numbers array 5555

}

Part C :-

In program we initilize x with value 1 and create an array y of 10 elements.

we initilize the y[0] with 1\

then we call function m. In function m ,first argument is value of x and second argument is the pointer to the first element of array y.

so value of x is changed locally in function m and change is not reflected in main function.

but value of y[0] is changed to 5555 because of pass by refrence.

So we are getting the following result :-

x is 1

y[0] is 5555
