An unstable particle, initially at rest, decays into a proton (rest energy 938.3 MeV) and a negative pion (rest energy 139.5 MeV

). A uniform magnetic field of 0.250 T exists perpendicular to the velocities of the created particles. The radius of curvature of each track is found to be 1.33 m. What is the mass of the original unstable particle?

Answer:

the mass of the original unstable particle is 1115.08 MeV/c²

Explanation:

The momentum of a particle is determined by:

p = e B R

where

 • B is the magnetic field
 • R is the radius of curvature
 • e is the energy of the particle

Therefore,

p = e B R kg · m/s

We can transform the units to MeV/c and we do that by taking:

e = 0.511 MeV and

c = 3 × 10⁸ m/s

Therefore,

p = 300 B R MeV/c

p = 300(0.250 T)(1.33 m) MeV/c

p = 99.75 MeV/c

The energy of the unstable decayed particle is determined as:

E = √ [m²c⁴ + p²c²]

where

 • m is the mass of the particle
 • c is the speed of light
 • p is the particle's momentum

Therefore,

E = E_p + E_(π⁻)

E = √[ (938.3)² + (99.75)² ] + √[ (139.5)² + (99.75)² ]

E = 1115.08 MeV

Since the particle was initially at rest, its energy is only rest-mass energy so its mass will be 1115.08 MeV/c²

Describe in your own words what is meant by the statement that the Sun is in hydrostatic equilibrium.
Jet001 [13]

Answer and Explanation:

Hydrostatic equilibrium is the condition in which force is balance that is upward force and downward force the downward force is due to gravitational force and the upward force is due to the pressure. The Sun is said to be in hydrostatic equilibrium means the force acting on it is balance means upward force which is due to pressure is same as the force exerted by gravitation.

What latitudes are most likely to see glaciers??
olga55 [171]

Answer : Option D) 90°N and 90°S

Explanation : The latitudes which are given in the options are the angle to be measured in the direction of north and south respectively taking equator as the central line.

When it is 90°N and 90°S it means it forms an right angle and faces towards north and south respectively with respect to the equator, so there are high chances of pointing towards the Arctic and Antarctic regions respectively; therefore giving greater probability of finding glaciers.

Hardness in groundwater is due to the presence of metal ions. True or False
choli [55]

Answer:

False

Explanation:

Water hardness in most groundwater is due to a natural occurrence caused by the weathering of limestone, sedimentary rock and calcium bearing minerals. Hardness can also occur locally in groundwater from chemical and mining industry effluent or excessive application of lime to the soil in agricultural areas.

Limestone is not a metallic element or metallic alloy, although it does contain the metallic element calcium, it is not formed by the same processes as metals are.
