Answer: a) BaCl_2

b)  BiO_3H_3

Explanation:

If percentage are given then we are taking total mass is 100 grams.

So, the mass of each element is equal to the percentage given.

a) Mass of Ba= 66.06 g

Mass of Cl = 34.0 g

Step 1 : convert given masses into moles.

Moles of Ba =\frac{\text{ given mass of ba}}{\text{ molar mass of Ba}}= \frac{66.06g}{137g/mole}=0.48moles

Moles of Cl = \frac{\text{ given mass of Cl}}{\text{ molar mass of Cl}}= \frac{34g}{35.5g/mole}=0.96moles[/tex]

Step 2 : For the mole ratio, divide each value of moles by the smallest number of moles calculated.

For Ba = \frac{0.48}{0.48}=1

For O =\frac{0.96}{0.48}=2

The ratio of Ba: Cl= 1:2

Hence the empirical formula is BaCl_2

b) Mass of Bi= 80.38 g

Mass of O= 18.46 g

Mass of H = 1.16 g

Step 1 : convert given masses into moles.

Moles of Bi =\frac{\text{ given mass of ba}}{\text{ molar mass of Ba}}= \frac{80.38g}{209g/mole}=0.38moles

Moles of O= \frac{\text{ given mass of O}}{\text{ molar mass of O}}= \frac{18.46g}{16g/mole}=1.15moles

Moles of H=\frac{\text{ given mass of H}}{\text{ molar mass of H}}= \frac{1.16g}{1g/mole}=1.16moles

Step 2 : For the mole ratio, divide each value of moles by the smallest number of moles calculated.

For Bi= \frac{0.38}{0.38}=1

For O =\frac{1.15}{0.38}=3

For H=\frac{1.16}{0.38}=3

The ratio of Bi: O: H= 1:3: 3

Hence the empirical formula is BiO_3H_3

The density of liquid mercury is 13.69 g/cm^3. How many atoms of mercury are in a 15.0 cm^3 sample? Use "E" for "x10" and use si
balu736 [363]
The formula is  m = D x V
D = <span>13.69 g/cm^3.
</span>V = <span>15.0 cm^3
the mass of the liquid mercury is m= </span>13.69 g/cm^3 x 15.0 cm^3 = 195g
the molar mass of Hg is 200,
1 mole of Hg = 200g Hg, so #mole of Hg= 195 / 200 = 0.97 mol
but we know that
 1 mole  = 6.022 E23 atoms
0.97 mole=?

6.022 E23 atoms x 0.97 / 1 mole = 5.84 E23 atoms

Calculate the mass in grams for each of the following liquids.
WITCHER [35]
The density is calculated as mass per volume, so if we want to solve for mass, we would multiply density by volume.
For Part A: if we have a density of 0.69 g/mL, and a volume of 280 mL, multiplying these will give a mass of: (0.69 g/mL)(280 mL) = 193.2 g. Rounded to 2 significant figures, this is 190 g gasoline.
For Part B: if we have a density of 0.79 g/mL, and a volume of 190 mL, multiplying these will give a mass of: (0.79 g/mL)(190 mL) = 150.1 g. Rounded to 2 significant figures, this is equal to 150 g ethanol.

What is the difference between an atom and an element?
Travka [436]

Answer:

A particular atom will have the same number of protons and electrons and most atoms have at least as many neutrons as protons. An element is a substance that is made entirely from one type of atom

Explanation:

so In simple terms an atom contains Protons and Electrons and can be found in an Element, but an element comprises of atoms which come together to form up that particular Element
