A water main for a street is being laid using mechanical joint pipe. the pipe comes in 18-foot and 20-foot sections, and a desig

Let

x--------> the total length of the water main

we know that

the number of 20 ft pipes is x/20

and

the number of 18 ft pipes is x/18

Since they differ by 14 pipes,

we have the equation

x/18 - x/20 = 14

Solve for x (by canceling fractions)

20x - 18x = 14*18*20

x = (14*18*20)/2

x = 2,520 ft

therefore

the answer is

the total length of the water main is 2,520 ft

To solve this problem you must apply the proccedure shown below:

1. You can write the following expression, where the variable x is the total length of the water main:

\frac{x}{18}-\frac{x}{20}=14

2. Now, solve for x, as following:

\frac{10x-9x}{180}=14\\ x=(14)(180)\\ x=2520

Therefore, the answer is: 2520 feet

The domain of this equation is the lowest x value to the highest x value. For example: lowest is -4 and highest is 3. You would write it as [-4,3]

For this equation, the domain is (-infinity,infinity) because there is no lowest or highest x value.

Question
Mashutka [201]

The equivalent value of given the expression is -17.25. Therefore, option C is the correct answer.

<h3>What is an equivalent expression?</h3>

Equivalent expressions are expressions that work the same even though they look different. If two algebraic expressions are equivalent, then the two expressions have the same value when we plug in the same value for the variable.

The given expression is -14-8×0.5+0.75.

Now, -14-8×0.5+0.75

= -14-(8×0.5)+0.75

= -14-4+0.75

= -18+0.75

= -17.25

The equivalent value of given the expression is -17.25. Therefore, option C is the correct answer.

Answer:

  • The first option: $265.05

Step-by-step explanation:

<h3>Option 1</h3>

<u>Payment as sequence:</u>

  • 11.75, 12.10, 12.45, ...

<u>This is an AP with:</u>

  • The first term a = 11.75
  • Common difference d = 0.35
  • Number of terms n = 18

<u>Find the sum of the first 18 terms:</u>

  • S₁₈ = (a + a₁₈)*18/2 = (a + a + 17d)*9 = (11.75*2 + 17*0.35)*9  = $265.05
<h3>Option 2</h3>

Flat rate $14.50 per hour

<u>The sum is:</u>

  • $14.50*18 = $261.00

<u>Compared, we see the first option pays more:</u>

  • $265.05 > $261.00
