According to the work of Durkheim which is based on the Structural-Functional Theory. He supported that deviance is an essential, and a normal part of the society as it helps in maintaining the social order.
According to him, one of the functions of deviance is an affirmation of cultural norms and values which means punishing a person for deviance helps in maintaining the fact that what is acceptable in society and what is not. So, it confirms social norms, promoting social cohesion.
