8 > 7 + \frac{x}{6} Subtract 7 from both sides

1 > \frac{x}{6} Multiply both sides by 6

6 > x Flip it around so it's easier to read

x < 6

You can graph your answer by drawing an open circle at the 6 and coloring the line to the left. The circle should be open, because x is less than 6, not less than or equal to. You would color to the left to show that x can be anything less than 6.

What is the equation of the line shown in this graph?

Enter your answer in the box
IgorLugansk [536]
This is a horizontal line at y = -3. If you want to find it mathematically, you could find the slope (y2-y1)/(x2-x1) and you would get 0 over 5, so you know the slope is zero. Pick either point and substitute the numbers into point-slope formula. I went with (3, -3) and got (y - -3) = 0(x-3). The right side is just 0, and if you subtract three from both sides to isolate y, you get the equation y = -3.

What are the differences between an (Algebraic) equation and expression?
lara31 [8.8K]

Hello!

An equation has an (=). They equal something. For example, 1+1=2 is an equation.

An expression does not have an equal sign. For example, 2 or 1+3 are both expressions. They have no equal sign.

I hope this helps!

Amma hikes 2and3/4 miles of nature trail in 1 hour and 15 minutes. How many miles does Amman hike per hour?
LekaFEV [45]
Formula
====
d = r * t

Givens
======
d = 2 3/4
t = 1 hour 15 minutes
r = ????

Calculations
==========
You need to convert the 15 minutes to hours.
1 hour = 60 minutes
x hour = 15 minutes

1/60 = x/15
x = 15/60
x = 0.25 hours
so the time = 1 hours + 0.25 hours
t = 1.25 hours

Now you need to do something with the distance.
3/4 mile = 0.75 of a mile
So the distance = 2 + 0.75 = 2.75 miles

Now you are ready for the answer.
d = r * t you are looking for r
2.75 = r * 1.25
r = 2.75/1.25
r = 2.2 miles / hour

Note you could do this with fractions.
2 3/4 = 11/4
1 1/4 = 5/4

r = 11/4 // 5/4 =11/5 = 2 1/5 which is the same thing as 2.2. If your calculator can handle fractions (those kind of calculators cost about 10 dollars in Canada. It should be 8 in the US) that might be the way to do this problem.
