A research firm conducted a survey to determine the mean amount Americans spend on coffee during a week. They found the distribu

tion of weekly spending followed the normal distribution with a population standard deviation of $5. A sample of 64 Americans revealed that X¯¯¯=$20.
A. What is the point estimate of the population mean? Explain what it indicates.
B. Using the 95 percent level of confidence, determine the confidence interval for μ. Explain what it indicates.

Answer: point estimate of mean = 20 dollars

interval estimate of mean = (18.775, 21.225)

Step-by-step explanation: A) point estimate

the main concept about point estimate is the fact that a single value derived from the sample is used directly to make inference about the population.

This simply means that for point estimation, sample estimator = population estimator

In this question of ours, our sample mean x-bar = 20 dollars, that implies that the population mean is also 20 dollars.

The implication of our answer is that an average american spends 20 dollars on dollars on coffee.

B) interval estimate.

the 95 percent confidence interval for population mean is given by the formulae below

μ = x + Zα/2 * σ/√n or μ = x - Zα/2 * σ/√n

where, μ = population mean, x = sample mean = 20, n= sample size= 64, σ= population standard deviation. Zα/2= z score at 5 percent level of significance for a two tailed test = 1.96 (note that level of significance = 1 - confidence level).

for μ = x + Zα/2 * σ/√n

μ = 20+ 1.96 (5/√64)

μ = 20 + 1.96 * (5/8)

μ  = 20 + 1.96 (0.625)

μ  = 20 + 1.225

μ  = 21.225

μ = x - Zα/2 * σ/√n

μ = 20- 1.96 (5/√64)

μ = 20 - 1.96 * (5/8)

μ  = 20 - 1.96 (0.625)

μ  = 20 - 1.225

μ  = 18.775

Thus at 95 percent level of significance, population interval is (18.775, 21.225).

The implication of this is that on the average , an American spends at least 18.775 dollars on coffee and at most 21.225 dollars.

mary has 39 square feet of patio bricks. each square brick has sides 1 foot long. what is the greatest perimeter of a rectangle
bearhunter [10]

-- The smallest perimeter you can make with a certain area
is a circle.

-- The NEXT smallest perimeter with the same area is a square.

   With 1-ft by 1-ft square bricks, the shortest perimeter she could
make would be by using her bricks to make it as square as possible.
Without cutting bricks into pieces, the best she could do would be

                           (13 bricks) x (3 bricks) .

                            =    (13-ft) x (3-ft)

           Perimeter = (2 x length) + (2 x width)

                             = (2 x 13-ft)  +  (2 x 3-ft)

                             =      (26-ft)  +  (6-ft)  =  32 feet  <== shortest perimeter.

-- Then, the more UNSQUARE you make it, the more perimeter
it takes to enclose the same area. That means Mary has to make
a rectangle as long and skinny as she can.

The longest perimeter she can make (without cutting bricks into
pieces) is    (39 bricks) x (1 brick) .

                        = (39-ft)  x  (1-ft) .

    Perimeter  =  (2 x length) + (2 x width)

                       =   (2 x 39-ft)  +  (2 x 1-ft)

                       =        (78-ft)  +  (2-ft)     =     80 feet .

What she'll have then is a brick path, 39 feet long and 1 foot wide,
and when you walk on it, you'll need to try hard to avoid falling off
because it's only 1 foot wide.

A farmer wishes to fence a rectangular area behind his barn. The barn forms one end of the rectangle and the length of the recta
Semenov [28]
1. The formula for calculate the perimeter of a rectangle, is:

P=2L+2W

P is the perimeter of the rectangle (P=320 feet).
L is the lenght of the rectangle.
W is the width of the rectangle.

2. The problem says that the length of the rectangle is three times the width, so you have:

L=3W

3. When you substitute L=3W and P=320, into P=2L+2W, you obtain:

P=2L+2W
320=2(3W)+2W
320=6W+2W
8W=320
W=320/8
W=40 feet

4. The barn forms one end of the rectangle. Therefore the linear feet of fence (x) is:

x=P-W
x=320 feet-40 feet
x=280 feet

How many linear feet of fence must he buy?

The answer is: 280 feet

△HFM∼△PST
loris [4]

Answer:

The perimeter of △HFM is 50.75 units

Step-by-step explanation:

The correct picture of the question in the attached figure

we know that

If two figures are similar, then the ratio of its corresponding sides is proportional, and this ratio is called the scale factor

we have

△HFM∼△PST ----> given problem

step 1

Find the scale factor

Let

z ----> the scale factor

z=\frac{HF}{PS}

substitute the given values

z=\frac{14}{8}=1.75

step 2

Find the perimeter of triangle PST

Remember that the perimeter of a triangle is the sum of its three length sides

P=8+9+12=29\ units

step 3

Find the perimeter of triangle HFM

we know that

If two figures are similar, then the ratio of its perimeters is equal to the scale factor

so

The perimeter of triangle HFM is equal to the perimeter of triangle PST multiplied by the scale factor

so

29(1.75)=50.75\ units

Which equations could you use to solve the following problem? Fifty-six is 85% of what number? 56 = (0.85)w = = p = (0.85)56
Sidana [21]

Answer:

56 = (0.85)w

Step-by-step explanation:

"is" translates to "=".

"of" translates to "×".

We can let "what number" translate to "w".

Then ...

56 is 85% of what number . . . . translates to ...

56 = 0.85×w

_____

Of course, you know that 85% = 85/100 = 0.85.
