With time, the Roman Empire was split into two parts: the Western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire. When the Western Roman Empire fell, Rome also fell, as it it was located there. The Eastern Roman Empire however survived a lot longer, and in this way the (Eastern) Roman Empire survived longer than Rome.
