During medieval times, the main political system of organization was feudalism. In this system, yeomen were commoners who had their own land, and cultivated it. They did not cultivate a lord's land. Yeomen, therefore, were identified as small landowners, which was one step down from the landed gentry. The people who did not owned land, and had to farm the land on a lord's manor were called villeins or serfs.
As for the largest number of ports, i'm pretty sure that the British and the French held the most of it. I'm not sure about which one is the least though, but it won't be the country that had a strong military empire.
