What is the average speed (actually the root-mean-square speed) of a argon atom at 27°C?

Chemistry

T = temperature of argon atom = 27 °C

in kelvin , temperature is given as

T = temperature of argon atom = 27 + 273 = 300 K

M = mass of atom of argon = 39.9 x 10⁻³ kg/mol

R = gas constant = 8.314

v = root mean square speed

root mean square speed is given as

v = sqrt(3RT/M)

inserting the values

v = sqrt(3(8.314)(300)/(39.9 x 10⁻³))

v = sqrt(7482.6/(39.9 x 10⁻³))

v = sqrt(187533.835)

v = 433.1 m/s

23.495 g sample of aqueous waste leaving a fertilizer manufacturer contains ammonia. The sample is diluted with 72.311 g of wate
Otrada [13]

Answer:

1.86% NH₃

Explanation:

The reaction that takes place is:

 • HCl(aq) + NH₃(aq) → NH₄Cl(aq)

We calculate the moles of HCl that reacted, using the volume used and the concentration:

 • 32.27 mL ⇒ 32.27/1000 = 0.03227 L
 • 0.1080 M * 0.03227 L = 3.4852x10⁻³ mol HCl

The moles of HCl are equal to the moles of NH₃, so now we calculate the mass of NH₃ that was titrated, using its molecular weight:

 • 3.4852x10⁻³ mol NH₃ * 17 g/mol = 0.0592 g NH₃

The weight percent NH₃ in the aliquot (and thus in the diluted sample) is:

 • 0.0592 / 12.949 * 100% = 0.4575%

Now we calculate the total mass of NH₃ in the diluted sample:

Diluted sample total mass = Aqueous waste Mass + Water mass = 23.495 + 72.311 = 95.806 g

 • 0.4575% * 95.806 g = 0.4383 g NH₃

Finally we calculate the weight percent NH₃ in the original sample of aqueous waste:

 • 0.4383 g NH₃ / 23.495 g * 100% = 1.86% NH₃

Describe what occurs to the particles of a substance when the substance melts. Explain why this occurs.
GuDViN [60]

Explanation:

As a substance melts, and goes from a solid to a liquid state, the kinetic energy of the molecules increases, and the molecules move faster, and they separate further and further away from each other. The intermolecluar forces holding the molecules together become weaker

The temperature of 170 g of a material decreases by 20.0⁰C when it loses 3050 J of heat. What is its specific heat
qaws [65]

Answer:

0.897 J/g.⁰C

Explanation:

Given the following data:

m = 170 g (mass)

ΔT = 20.0⁰C (change in temperature)

q = 3050 J (amount of heat)

The amount of heat (q) is calculated as follows:

q = m x Cp x ΔT

Thus, we introduce the data in the mathematical expression to calculate the specific heat (Cp):

Cp = q/(m x ΔT) = 3050 J/(170 g x 20.0⁰C) = 0.897 J/g.⁰C
