ATP or Adenosine Triphosphate has been called as the chemical currency or the molecular unit of currency of the cell. ATP plays an important role in metabolism because it transports chemical energy within the cells which is the direct source of energy. ATP is made when one burns sugars or other nutrients; it is also consumed when one is involved on some activities that build larger molecules and producing movements. ATP is a by-product of cellular respiration, photosynthesis, fermentation, and photophosphorylation. It is used in cells as a coenzyme of intracellular transfer of energy by enzymes and structural proteins in may processes like cell division and motility.
