Smoking causes about 50 different diseases, mainly cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, heart attack, angina, and stroke. It is responsible for many deaths from lung, mouth, larynx, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, kidney and bladder cancer and obstructive respiratory diseases such as chronic bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema. Tobacco lowers the body's defenses and thus the smoker tends to increase the incidence of acquiring diseases such as influenza and tuberculosis. Tobacco also causes sexual impotence.
Some specific actions are used by government to descrease the number of costumers, as:
- ban tobacco advertising;
- widening the space reserved for warnings about the harmful effects of smoke on packets;
- Founded the American Legacy Foundation, a research and education organization that works to prevent adolescent smoking and encourages smokers to quit. This foundation is responsible for the "The Truth" campaign.
- Closure of activities of tobacco industry centers such as the Tobacco Institute, The Center for Indoor Air Research and The Council for Tobacco Research. Ban on the creation of other similar groups.
