What was the significance of Custer's Last Stand?
schepotkina [342]

Custer's Last Stand also known as The Battle of Little Bighorn was the last battle of General George Custer, in which the entire cavalry regiment was massacred by the united Native American tribes of the Sioux, Arabs, and Cheyenes. The battle took place on June 25, 1876.

The Indian army was led by Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull. The main reason for this conflict was that the Indians refused to give the government ownership of the Black Mountains where gold was discovered.

In response, the government sent 3 cavalry regiments to them. The 7th Cavalry regiment led by General Custer moved far faster than the other two behind. When Custer came to Little Big Horn at a huge Native American village, he refused the advice of his Native American guides to delay the attack and undermine his forces.

Explanation:

  • Before the attack, Custer, who had about 500 men under his command, divided his forces into three sections, intending to besiege the village and carry out an attack on three sides so that none of the Indians would escape.
  • Custer assigned 3 companies to Benteen and Reno, each while taking 5 companies to himself. The battle ended with the withdrawal of Benteen and Reno's forces and the complete destruction of the troops commanded by General Custer.
  • Out of the Custer group of about 200 people, only one survived.
  • Before the battle, the Sitting Bull had a vision that told him that the Indians would win, but that they should not take things from the killed soldiers at any cost because they would be punished, he warned the Indian warriors about that, but they did not obey him. Because of this defeat, Rene was taken to court because he refused to assist General Custer but was found innocent at trial.
