The cell wall surrounds cell membrane of some cell types. It is present in plants and fungi, as well as prokaryotic cells and its role is structure and protection. Turgor pressure makes a pressure on plasma membrane against the cell wall. If there were no cell wall around the cell, when cytoplasm gains the water, the cytoplasm will swell until plasma membrane burst. But, cell wall is rigid structure that helps plant cell to keep its shape <span>no matter how much water is in the vacuole.</span>
