As a South Carolina senator, Calhoun used the argument of states' rights to protect slavery in what is known as the Nullification Crisis of 1832-1833. At the end of his senatorial career, Calhoun opposed the Compromise of 1850 because of its proposed limits on slavery during the westward expansion of the nation.
The first reason was because he claimed that the sun is the center of the universe which the Church believed was heretical as it opposed what was written in the holy scriptures. The second was that he stated that Earth moves around the sun and is not immovable as was believed, but this was deemed heretical also due to holy scriptures.
