How would this heart defect affect the ability of the cardiovascular system to deliver oxygen to body cells?
Answer: The septum prevents oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood from mixing in the heart. If there is a hole in the septum between the left and right ventricles, oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood would be able to mix and the cardiovascular system would not be able to deliver oxygen-rich blood to the cells and the cells won’t be able to get the oxygen needed.
That defect is called a ventricular septal defect (VSD). The left side of the heart carries oxygen rich blood to the body; however, in VSD some of the oxygen rich blood got push to the other side of the heart and mix with oxygen poor blood. At the same time, depleting the oxygen rich blood that is going to the body.
