Consider a study of two genes, "A" and "B". Each gene has two alleles, represented by upper- and lower-case letters. Assume that

an upper-case letter represents a dominant allele, and a lower-case letter represents a recessive allele. If the parental cross ("P" generation) is AABB x aabb, which the following crosses would represent an F1 testcross?

Answer:

AaBb × aabb

Explanation:

A test cross is a cross between an unknown genotype (dominant phenotype) with a homozygous recessive genotype in order to discover the actual genotype of the species exhibiting dominant phenotype.

This is because one allele of a gene is capable of masking the expression of another, the allele masking is called DOMINANT allele while the allele being masked is called RECESSIVE allele. The combination of these two alleles is termed heterozygosity.

An organism that is phenotypically dominant for a specific trait may either be heterozygous or homozygous for that gene. For example, a plant gene for tallness with an dominant allele T, and recessive allele t. This plant will need tall if the genotype is TT (homozygous dominant) or Tt (heterozygous dominant). In order to know which of these genotypes the plant actually has, a test cross is conducted.

In this example, two genes A and B are involved. For the first gene, A represents dominant allele while a represents recessive allele. For the second gene, B represents dominant allele while b represents recessive allele.

In a cross involving parents AABB (homozygous dominant for both genes) and aabb (homozygous recessive for both genes), the F1 progeny will all exhibit phenotypic dominance (AaBb).

However, we cannot know the genotype by merely looking at the phenotype. We cannot ascertain yet whether the dominance is heterozygous or homozygous, hence the need for a test cross.

The test cross is between the dominant F1 progeny and a homozygous recessive i.e. AaBb × aabb. Some of the F2 generation will show recessive traits if the unknown genotype is heterozygous.

Explanation of Answer 1

Ice cores are in essence drilled cylinders that are acquired from glaciers or ice sheets. Ice sheets and glaciers are formed over many years as a result of deposits of snow layers. As these layers form, the lower layers become denser with each new layer, owing to pressure, and in the process it traps the air, which is preserved in the form of bubbles in the layer, therein preserving the composition of the air at a particular period of time. Scientists use ice cores to compare the atmospheric composition of previous years to those of recent years, and the gas mainly studied is carbon dioxide owing to its bringing about a climatic change.

Explanation of Answer 2

The Earth's orbit is caused by the gravitational attraction that is present between the Earth and the Sun, but changes due to the shape of the orbit (eccentricity), the wobble of the Earth about its axis (precession), and the axial tilt of the Earth (obliquity). These cause a change in the Earths orbit, which give rise to Milankovitch's cycles. Milankovitch's Cycles describes a revolutionary movement of the Earth around the Sun. These cycles are observed to be determinants of the climate of the Earth, in the regard of how much heat or energy the Earth is exposed to.

Hope this helps!

A common symptom that would alert the nurse that a preterm infant is developing respiratory distress syndrome is:_________
Ede4ka [16]

A common symptom that would alert the nurse that a preterm infant is developing respiratory distress syndrome is expiratory grunting.

An audible grunt (forced expiratory sound) in a newborn is a crucial indicator of pulmonary disease and reveals a small lung volume or functional residual capacity (FRC). The baby's FRC rises when breathing against a partially closed glottis, maintaining the alveoli's patent state.

In an effort to maintain FRC and avoid alveolar atelectasis, the glottis suddenly closes on expiration, causing a grunting sound. Achieving and maintaining physiologic FRC is crucial in the management of respiratory illnesses with poor compliance, such as RDS or TTN, because lung compliance is worse at very low or very high FRC.
