The Missouri Compromise refers to the fact that Missouri was accepted as a slave state, as well as Maine was considered a free state. This Compromise also prohibited slavery in the territories that are now called Kansas and Nebraska.

However, in 1857 this compromise was considered unconstitutional by the  Supreme Court. At that time, there were some disputes established between slave and free states.
