Answers:

a = 2

h = 3

k = -3

You have the correct h and k values. Nice work so far.

==========================================================

Explanation:

(h,k) is the vertex. So (h,k) = (3,-3) meaning h = 3 and k = -3

To get the value of 'a', we need to plug in some point on the red graph. Each point is of the form (x,y). We can pick any point we want that isn't the vertex.

Let's pick (0,3) which is the y intercept. I'm picking this because 0 is an easy number to work with

------------

y = a|x-h| + k

y = a|x-3| + (-3) .... plug in the h,k values

y = a|x-3| - 3

3 = a|0-3| - 3 .... plug in (x,y) = (0,3)

3 = a|-3| - 3

3 = a*3 - 3

3 = 3a - 3

3a-3 = 3

3a = 3+3 ... adding 3 to both sides

3a = 6

a = 6/3 ... divide both sides by 3

a = 2

The value a = 2 indicates that the parent function y = |x| has been stretched vertically by a factor of 2. So it is twice as tall as before. Then it has been shifted to place the vertex at (3,-3) as shown in the graph.

------------

You may be wondering why you can't pick on the vertex for (x,y)

Let's see what happens if we use (x,y) = (3,-3)

y = a|x-3| - 3

-3 = a|3-3| - 3 ... plug in (x,y) = (3,-3)

-3 = a|0| - 3 ... uh oh, we get 0 here

-3 = a*0 - 3

-3 = 0 - 3

-3 = -3

We get a true statement, which is nice, but it doesn't tell us anything about what the value of 'a' is. That 'a' term goes away entirely. So I avoided using x = 3 to prevent x-3 from being 0.

How to distribute this problem:<br> (x-8)^2 + 16
Usimov [2.4K]

Answer:

We conclude that:

\left(x-8\right)^2+16=x^2-16x+80

Step-by-step explanation:

Given the equation

\left(x-8\right)^2\:+\:16

First, solve (x - 8)²

Apply Perfect Square formula:    (a - b)² = a² - 2ab + b²

a=x,\:\:b=8

\left(x-8\right)^2=x^2-2x\cdot \:\:8+8^2

             =x^2-16x+64

so the expression becomes

\left(x-8\right)^2+16=x^2-16x+64+16

                     =x^2-16x+80           Add the numbers: 64+16=80

Therefore, we conclude that:

\left(x-8\right)^2+16=x^2-16x+80

Which represents the solutions of the system of equations
ad-work [718]

Answer:

(1,1)

Step-by-step explanation:

Since y=x, we can say x=x^2-x+1. This means x^2-2x+1=0. x=1, y=1, thus your solution is (1,1).

Write the equation of the line that passes through (-6,0) and is parallel to the line y=5x-43
AVprozaik [17]

The equation of the line that passes through (-6,0) and is parallel to the line y = 5x - 43 in slope intercept is y = 5x + 30

<em><u>Solution:</u></em>

Given that line that passes through (-6, 0) and is parallel to the line y = 5x - 43

We have to find the equation of line

Let us first find slope of line having equation y = 5x - 43

<em><u>The slope intercept form of line is given as:</u></em>

y = mx + c  ------- eqn 1

Where "m" is the slope of line and "c" is the y - intercept

On comparing equation of line y = 5x - 43 with slope intercept form y = mx + c,

we get m = 5

Thus slope of given line is 5

We know that slopes of parallel lines are equal

Thus the slope of line parallel to given line is also 5

Now let us find equation of line having slope "5" and passes through (-6, 0)

Substitute m = 5 and (x, y) = (-6, 0) in eqn 1

y = mx + c

0 = 5(-6) + c

<h3>c = 30</h3>

<em><u>Thus the required equation is:</u></em>

Substitute c = 30 and m = 5 in eqn 1

y = 5x + 30

Thus the required equation of line is found

What would the answer to this question be?<br> A. 40°<br> B. 60°<br> C. 80°<br> D. 100°
Alex777 [14]

Answer:

D. 100°

Step-by-step explanation:

A straight line is 180°. Add 50° and 30° (which is 80°) and subtract the total from 180°.

50 + 30 = 80

180 - 80 = 100
