Two ships have a harbor entrance at the same time. The first ship is traveling at a constant 16 mph, while the second is traveli

ng at a constant 20 mph. If the angle between the course is 169°, how far apart are they after 2 hours? (Round answer to nearest whole number.)

So hmm check the picture below

both ships leave at the same time, one is going 16mph, the other 20mph, 2hrs later on the road

at 16mph well, 2hrs is just 16+16, or 32 miles away
20mph for 2hrs, is 20+20, or 40 miles away

using the law of cosines  \bf x = \sqrt{{{ 32}}^2+{{ 40}}^2-2(32)(40)cos(169^o)}

again, recall, the angle is in degrees, so, when taking the cosine, make sure your calculator is in Degree mode

The lifespan (in days) of the common housefly is best modeled using a normal curve having mean 22 days and standard deviation 5.
Natasha_Volkova [10]

Answer:

Yes, it would be unusual.

Step-by-step explanation:

To solve this question, we need to understand the normal probability distribution and the central limit theorem.

Normal probability distribution

Problems of normally distributed samples are solved using the z-score formula.

In a set with mean \mu and standard deviation \sigma, the zscore of a measure X is given by:

Z = \frac{X - \mu}{\sigma}

The Z-score measures how many standard deviations the measure is from the mean. After finding the Z-score, we look at the z-score table and find the p-value associated with this z-score. This p-value is the probability that the value of the measure is smaller than X, that is, the percentile of X. Subtracting 1 by the pvalue, we get the probability that the value of the measure is greater than X.

If Z \leq -2 or Z \geq 2, the outcome X is considered unusual.

Central Limit Theorem

The Central Limit Theorem estabilishes that, for a normally distributed random variable X, with mean \mu and standard deviation \sigma, the sampling distribution of the sample means with size n can be approximated to a normal distribution with mean \mu and standard deviation s = \frac{\sigma}{\sqrt{n}}.

For a skewed variable, the Central Limit Theorem can also be applied, as long as n is at least 30.

In this question, we have that:

\mu = 22, \sigma = 5, n = 25, s = \frac{5}{\sqrt{25}} = 1

Would it be unusual for this sample mean to be less than 19 days?

We have to find Z when X = 19. So

Z = \frac{X - \mu}{\sigma}

By the Central Limit Theorem

Z = \frac{19 - 22}{1}

Z = -3

Z = -3 \leq -2, so yes, the sample mean being less than 19 days would be considered an unusual outcome.

Each digit 8 in the number 8.888 has a different value placed on its place in the place-value chart. Each 8 is multiplied by its
stich3 [128]

Answer:

The value of every digit in a decimal figure is given by its position in that figure.

Step-by-step explanation:

<em>The Rule:</em>

The value of every digit in a decimal figure is given by its position in that figure.

For the figure 8.888, from left to right,

The first 8 is in units

The second 8 is in tenth (this means 8/10 = 0.8)

The third 8 is in hundreth (this means 8/100 = 0.08)

The fourth 8 is in thousandth (this means 8/1000 = 0.008)

The sum of the place values of the digits after the decimal point = 0.888

when the unit 8 is added, you then get 8.888

Calculate the probability of needing at least 5 tosses of an unbiased coin to land a head.
Gnom [1K]

Answer:

0.03125

Step-by-step explanation:

If we have a fair coin the probability of landing a head is 50%.

We can think the question as what is the probability of landing four tails and then a head. That is we needed at least 5 tries to get a head.

Prob \{ T,T,T,T,H\}

Since this events are independent we can write it as

Prob \{ T\} \times Prob \{ T\} \times Prob \{ T\} \times Prob \{ T\} \times Prob \{ H\} =.5^5= 0.03125
