Answer : The Lewis structure for 3 nitrogen-containing compounds (NO_2,NH_3\text{ and }HNO_3) are shown below.

Explanation :

Lewis-dot structure : Lewis-dot structure shows the bonding between the atoms of a molecule and also shows the unpaired electrons present in the molecule.

(1) The given molecule is, nitrogen dioxide.

As we know that nitrogen has '5' valence electrons and oxygen has '6' valence electron.

Therefore, the total number of valence electrons in nitrogen dioxide, NO_2 = 5 + 2(6) = 17

According to Lewis-dot structure, there are 8 number of bonding electrons and 9 number of non-bonding electrons.

(2) The given molecule is, ammonia.

As we know that nitrogen has '5' valence electrons and hydrogen has '1' valence electron.

Therefore, the total number of valence electrons in ammonia, NH_3 = 5 + 3(1) = 8

According to Lewis-dot structure, there are 6 number of bonding electrons and 2 number of non-bonding electrons.

(3) The given molecule is, nitric acid.

As we know that nitrogen has '5' valence electrons, oxygen has '6' valence electrons and hydrogen has '1' valence electron.

Therefore, the total number of valence electrons in nitric acid, HNO_3 = 1 + 5 + 3(6) = 24

According to Lewis-dot structure, there are 10 number of bonding electrons and 14 number of non-bonding electrons.

The Lewis structure for 3 nitrogen-containing compounds (NO_2,NH_3\text{ and }HNO_3) are shown below.

For the Lewis Structure for N₃⁻, we place a double bond between the Nitrogen atoms to complete the outer shells on all atoms and we will only use the available valence electrons for the molecule. There are 16 valence electrons available.

If you have 10.0 g of hydrogen and 5.0 g of oxygen, what mass of the excess reagent remains after the completion of the reaction
mario62 [17]

mass Hydrogen=9.376 g

Further explanation

Reaction

2H₂+O₂⇒2H₂O

mass H₂ = 10 g

mol H₂(MW=2 g/mol) :

10 : 2 = 5

mass O₂=5 g

mol O₂(MW=32 g/mol) :

5 : 32 = 0.156

O₂ limiting reactant

mol H₂: mol O₂ = 2: 1, so mol H₂ :

2 x 0.156 = 0.312

mol H₂ :

5 - 0.132 =4.688

mass of H₂ :

4.688 x 2 =9.376 g
