1. In the reaction C5H8 + ______ O2 --> 8H2O + 5CO2, what coefficient should be placed in front of O2 to balance the reaction
Mazyrski [523]

1) Answer is: c. 9.

Balanced chemical reaction: C₅H₈ + 9O₂ → 8H₂O + 5CO₂.

Accordin to law of conservation of mass, there are eighteen oxygen atoms on both side of balanced chemical reaction.

This is example of combustion.

Combustion is reaction with oxygen.

Organic compound reacts with oxygen and produce carbon dioxide and water.

2) Answer is: c. Only the oxygen needs to be balanced. There are equal numbers of hydrogen and carbon.

According to principle of mass conservation, number of atoms must be equal on both side of chemical reaction.

There are two oxygen atoms on the left and six oxygen atoms on the right side of chemical reaction so chemical reaction is not balanced.

Balanced reaction of ethane combustion: C₂H₄ + 3O₂ → 2H₂O + 2CO₂.

3) Answer is: Hydrogen and chlorine need to be balanced. There is an equal amount of magnesium on each side.

According to principle of mass conservation, number of atoms must be equal on both side of chemical reaction.

There is one hydrogen atom on the left and two hydrogen atoms on the right side of chemical reaction so chemical reaction is not balanced.

There is one chlorine atom on the left and two chlorine atoms on the right side of chemical reaction so chemical reaction is not balanced.

Balanced reaction of ethane combustion: Mg + 2HCl → H₂ + MgCl₂.

4) Answer is: c. sugar stirred in tea.

Solution is homogeneous mixture has the same proporties of its components throughout any given sample, composed of two or more substances.

Solution has a uniform composition and is able to be separated by physical means.

In aqueous solution, solvent is water and solute (in this example sugar) is a substance dissolved in water.

Other examples are heterogeneous mixture.

Heterogeneous mixture is not uniform in composition.

An antifreeze solution is made by mixing ethylene glycol (ρ = 1116 kg/m3) with water. suppose the specific gravity of such a sol
Harman [31]
Answer is: the volume percentage of ethylene glycol in the solution is 43.1%.
V(solution) = 1 m³.
d(solution) = 1050 kg/m³.
m(solution) = 1050 kg.
d(ethylene glycol) = 1116 kg/m³.
d(water) = 1000 kg/m³.
m(solution) = d(ethylene glycol) · V(ethylene glycol) + d(water) · V(water).
V(ethylene glycol) = 1m³ - V(water).
1050 kg = 1116 kg/m³ · (1m³ - V(water)) + 1000 kg/m³ · V(water).
1050 kg = 1116 kg - 1116·V(water) + 1000·V(water).
116 kg/m³ ·V(water) = 66kg.
V(water) = 0.569 m³.
V(ethylene glycol) = 1 m³ - 0.569 m³ = 0.431 m³.
percentage = 0.431 m³ ÷ 1 m³ · 100% = 43.1%.

What is the definition of plate tectonics?
zhuklara [117]

The definition from what I know because I remember it from biology I think is "a theory explaining the structure of the earth's crust and some other associated phenomena as resulting from the interaction of a rigid lithospheric plates that move slowly over the underlying mantle." I'll put the quotations for you to copy what I said so it doesn't sound like you got it off me and I hopefully spelt lithospheric right
