The Ganges is considered a sacred river by the Hindu population of India. They believe that the goddess Ganga came down from heaven to inhabit the river, so they bathe and drink the river water, believing their sins will be purified. Hindu devotees visit the Ganges daily to offer food and flowers to the goddess.
