The atomic number in an element is usually how many protons the element has. For example, Hydrogen has a 1 on top of the H (on the periodic table), therefore, Hydrogen has 1 proton. Oxygen has an 8 on top of the O (on the periodic table) so therefore, Oxygen has 8 protons.

They undergo a change in shape when the neurotransmitter turns on, causing the channel to open. This can be an excitatory or inhibitory effect, depending on the ions that can pass through the channels and their concentrations inside and outside the cell.  Ligand-activated ion channels are large protein complexes. They have certain regions that are binding sites for neurotransmitters, as well as membrane segments to make up the channel.
