In order to solve for this, we have to find out how many words Ryan can type in one minute first.

$\frac{600 words}{12 minutes}$ can be simplified into $\frac{50 words}{1 minutes}$

(This is just normal simplifying, all you had to do was divide both sides by 12)

Now that we have our rate, $\frac{50 words}{1 minutes}$, we can figure out how many words Ryan can type in 20 minutes

$\frac{50 words}{1 minutes}$ * 20/20 = $\frac{1000 words}{20 minutes}$

Ryan can type 1000 words in 20 minutes

Method 2:

You can use two fractions in order to solve this equation:

$\frac{600 words}{12 minutes}$ = $\frac{x words}{20 minutes}$

The 'x' on the right is a variable because we don't know what the number is.

Simplify:

$\frac{50 words}{1 minutes}$ = $\frac{x words}{20 minutes}$

Cross multiply:

1 * x = 50 * 20

x = 1000

Ryan can type 1000 words in 20 minutes
