The human heart is a powerful and extremely reliable pump. Each day it takes in and discharges about 7500 L of blood. Assume tha

t the work done by the heart is equal to the work required to lift this amount of blood a height equal to that of the average American woman (1.63 m). The density (mass per unit volume) of blood is 1.05×103kg/m3. (a) How much work does the heart do in a day? (b) What is the heart’s power output in watts?

Answer:

(a) 1.257 x 10^5 J

(b) 1.456 Watt

Explanation:

Volume of blood, v = 7500 L = 7.5 m^3

Height, h = 1.63 m

density of blood, d = 1.05 x 10^3 kg/m^3

(a) work done = m x g x h

W = v x d x g x h = 7.5 x 1.05 x 1000 x 9.8 x 1.63 = 1.257 x 10^5 J

(b) time = 1 day = 24 x 60 x 60 s = 86400 seconds

Power = Work / time = 1.257 x 10^5 / 86400 = 1.456 Watt

Speedy Sue, driving at 34.0 m/s, enters a one-lane tunnel. She then observes a slow-moving van 160 m ahead traveling at 5.20 m/s
Zielflug [23.3K]

Answer:

there will be collision

Explanation:

v_{s} =  speed of sue = 34 m/s

v_{v} = speed of van = 5.20 m/s

v_{sv} = speed of sue relative to van  = v_{s} - v_{v} = 34 - 5.20 = 28.8 m/s

d_{s} = stopping distance after brakes are applied

D = distance between sue and van = 160 m

v_{f} = final speed of sue = 0 m/s

a = acceleration = - 1.80 m/s²

Using the kinematics equation

v_{f}^{2} = v_{o}^{2} + 2 a d_{s}

0^{2} = 28.8^{2} + 2 (1.80) d_{s}

d_{s} = 230.4 m

Since  d_{s} < D

hence there will be collision

A wave transfers:<br> Water<br> particles<br> energy<br> matter
SashulF [63]

Answer:

Particles in a water wave exchange kinetic energy for potential energy. When particles in water become part of a wave, they start to move up or down. This means that kinetic energy (energy of movement) has been transferred to them

It takes 500 J of work to compress a spring 10 cm. What is the force constant of the spring? (b) When a 3.0 kg block is pushed a
NARA [144]

Answer:

Explanation:

a) Energy stored in spring = 1/2 k x² = .5 x k 0.1²

500 = 5 x 10⁻³ k ,

k = (500/5) x 10³ = 10⁵ N/m

b )

k = 4.5 x 10¹ = 45 N/m

Stored energy = 1/2 k x² = .5 x 45 x 8² x 10⁻⁴ =1440 x 10⁻⁴ J

This energy gets dissipated by friction .

work done by friction = μ mg d

d is the distance traveled under friction

so 1440 x 10⁻⁴ = μ x 3 x 9.8 x 2

μ = 245 x 10⁻⁴  or 0.00245 which appears to be very small. .
