Food allergy is an immune system reaction that occurs after eating a certain food. Our immune system may perceive food that isn't actually dangerous as a threat and signal our body to defend itself. That's when it starts producing antibodies called Immunoglobulin E (IgE), and that's why even a tiny amount of the allergy-causing food can cause hives, digestive problems, or swelling of the airways.
