Certain environmental changes can denature proteins. Denatured proteins lose their three dimensional structure and when the prot

ein is an enzyme, they lose their ability to function. pH is just one factor that can change the effectiveness of an enzyme. What other factor might the students test regarding catalase specificity?
A) Students could test various other enzymes to see if all enzymes were denatured in a basic environment (pH = 13).
B) After determining the optimum pH, they could vary the temperature of the environment to see if catalase is temperature specific.
C) After determining the optimum pH, the students could vary the amount of catalase used while keeping the amount of substrate constant.
D) Students could test an assortment of food items besides liver, raw potato, apple, crackers, to see if catalase is consistently pH specific.

Answer:

B

Explination:

After determining the optimum pH, they could vary the temperature of the environment to see if catalase is temperature specific. Proteins can be denatured through exposure to heat, changes in pH, or chemicals. Students could vary the temperature of the liver, even boil it, to see if enzyme action continued.

B) After determining the optimum pH, they could vary the temperature of the environment to see if catalase is temperature specific

Enzymes are proteins which catalyze reactions by acting on substrates in order to speed up reactions- like the breakdown of large polysaccharides by amylase. Here, the enzyme catalase facilitates the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and hydrogen. Catalase specificity is affected by pH, temperature and the presence of inhibitors.

In temperatures beyond its optimal range, catalase may undergo changes to its physical structure called denaturation; when denatured, enzymes lose their ability to bind specifically to their substrate -i.e. substrate binding specificity is lost. H2O2 would no longer be able to bind to the active site, and thus would not be broken down.

The secondary structure of proteins results because of _____ bonding between molecules in the protein molecules' backbone.
topjm [15]

Answer:

Hydrogen bonding

Explanation:

The newly synthesised proteins as a result of the process of translation are linear structures formed by linear arrangement of amino acids.

The linear structure of a protein is known as the primary structure which changes its conformation and take the shape of either the helix or the pleated sheet. This helical or pleated sheet structure is known as a secondary structure.

The secondary structure is formed due to the bond formed between the hydrogen of the carbonyl group and the amino group which form the backbone of the protein structure. The hydrogen bond causes the linear polypeptide to form spiral helical or bend pleated sheet.

Thus, Hydrogen bonding is the correct answer.

How is muscle color related to muscle specialization?
kati45 [8]
Muscle color is related to muscle specialization because it indicates whether muscles are used more for aerobic or anaerobic metabolism. Aerobically respiring muscles that do work over a long period of time have more red oxidative fibers, while anaerobically respiring muscles that do work in bursts have more white glycolitic fibers.
