8. A company makes electronic components for TV's. 95% pass final inspection (and 5% fail and need to be fixed). 120 components
Taya2010 [7]

Using the binomial distribution, it is found that the variance of the number that pass inspection in one day is 5.7.

For each component, there are only two possible outcomes, either it passes inspection, or it does not. The probability of a component passing inspections is independent of any other component, hence, the binomial distribution is used to solve this question.

Binomial probability distribution

Probability of <u>exactly x successes on n repeated trials, with p probability</u>, and has variance given by:

V(X) = np(1 - p)

In this problem:

  • 95% pass final inspection, hence p = 0.95
  • 120 components are inspected in one day, hence n = 120.

The variance is given by:

V(X) = np(1 - p) = 120(0.95)(0.05) = 5.7

The variance of the number that pass inspection in one day is 5.7.

Can someone please explain to me why and how this equates to 7.4%??????
Mumz [18]

so, you're correct, it is the Food industry, and it went down from 2.7 to 2.5, well, so it really went down 2.7 - 2.5 or 0.2.

well, if we take 2.7 to be the 100% from that row, what is 0.2 off of it in percentage format?

\bf \begin{array}{ccll} amount&\%\\ \text{\textemdash\textemdash\textemdash}&\text{\textemdash\textemdash\textemdash}\\ 2.7&100\\ 0.2&x \end{array}\implies \cfrac{2.7}{0.2}=\cfrac{100}{x}\implies x=\cfrac{0.2\cdot 100}{2.7}\implies x\approx\stackrel{\%}{7.4}

I need help on how to do combinations
Veronika [31]
Ok sure! Let's start with the marbles first. We have one red one blue and one green. There is a red and a blue cube. All we do is list the possible combinations of one marble and one cube. The answer would be : 1 blue marble, 1 blue cube. 1 red marble, 1 blue cube. 1 green marble, 1 blue cube. Then again but with the red cube. So in all, there are 6 possible combinations. Hope this helps. ☺️
