There are special trigonometric angle ratios for right triangles, which are sine (sin), cosine (cos), and tangent (tan). Sine is opposite over hypotenuse, cosine is adjacent over hypotenuse, and tangent is opposite over adjacent.
You can remember this with SOHCAHTOA. S=sin, O=opposite, H=hypotenuse

The angle is given along with its adjacent side (1.2) and the hypotenuse (x). Use cosine.
Cos(33) = adjacent/hypotenuse
Cos(33) = 1.2/x
x = 1.2 / cos(33)

Now type into your calculator 1.2 / cos33

Find the value of y.
Phoenix [80]

\boxed{y=6\sqrt{3}}

<h2>Explanation:</h2>

For a better understanding of the problem I've built up two triangles from the given triangular shape. So these two triangles are similar. Therefore, we can solve this problem by using ratios and corresponding sides in this way:

\frac{x}{3}=\frac{12}{x} \\ \\ x^2=36 \\ \\ x=\sqrt{36} \\ \\ x=6

But our goal is to find y. Let's call w the height of the small triangle, then:

w=\sqrt{6^2-3^2}=3\sqrt{3}

Applying the concept of ratios again:

\frac{y}{w}=\frac{x}{3} \\ \\ y=w \left(\frac{x}{3}\right) \\ \\ y=3\sqrt{3}\left(\frac{6}{3}\right) \\ \\ \boxed{y=6\sqrt{3}}
