Leprosy is a chronic, transmissible disease caused by a  bacterium Mycobacterium leprae, a bacillus that has the capacity to infect a large number of individuals and mainly affects the skin and peripheral nerves.  It progresses slowly with a period average  incubation period of 3 years.  With the ability to cause neural injuries, giving the disease a high disabling power, mainly responsible for stigma and discrimination to people affected by the disease.
